What is included in our urn inscription service
Our urn inscription service covers the wording, layout and final application of names, dates and short memorial text on suitable urns and keepsake vessels. We work on metal, wood, ceramic and coated display pieces, and we match the finish to the surface so the inscription remains clear and dignified.
Each order includes a text review, spacing check and proof approval before production begins. If you need a simple name and dates, a favourite line, or a longer tribute, we help set it out neatly so the inscription suits the size of the urn and the viewing distance.
- Name, date and message engraving available
- Single line, stacked line or circular layout options
- Suitable for memorial urns and display vessels
- Careful font matching for legibility and balance
How the inscription process works from enquiry to finish
It starts with your enquiry: the wording you want, plus the size and material of the urn. If you are unsure about layout we can suggest wording lengths that suit the item without crowding the finish.
Once we have the details, we prepare a proof for approval. After approval, production is scheduled and the piece is handled in our Pretoria studio with care at every stage. For fragile vessels or items with a polished finish, we advise protective packing and careful handling especially during dry winter months when static and dust can be more noticeable.
- Enquiry and wording check
- Layout preparation and proof approval
- Inscription on the selected urn or display piece
- Final inspection, packing and collection or courier dispatch
Lettering styles, materials and practical specs
We keep the service practical and precise. The best method depends on the urn material, the available panel size and whether the piece is for display or sealed storage. In some cases a subtle inscription is better than a large one, particularly on smaller keepsakes where space is limited.
For most orders we recommend short wording that reads well from about 50 cm to 1 m away. If the urn has a curved surface, the text may need to be shortened slightly so the letters remain even across the arc. For coated and painted surfaces, we use a finish that is suited to the material and the expected handling.
- Common letter height: 3 mm to 12 mm depending on item size
- Typical wording length: 1 to 3 lines
- Suitable surface areas: panels from 20 mm up to 120 mm wide and more on larger vessels
- Best results on clean, dry surfaces with no loose finish or residue
Turnaround times and collection options
Turnaround depends on the wording length, the material and whether the item needs extra preparation before inscription. Most standard orders are completed within 3 to 5 working days after proof approval. More detailed memorial wording, larger vessels or multiple pieces in a family order may take a little longer.
We offer pickup options in Lynnwood, Menlyn, Brooklyn, Centurion, Silverton, Garsfontein, Montana and Midrand, and we can courier nationwide. Courier times vary by destination, with major centres usually moving quicker than outlying areas. For fragile items we package carefully to reduce movement in transit and keep the piece secure during load shedding related delays in dispatch schedules.
Pricing approach for single pieces and family orders
Our pricing is based on the amount of wording, the size of the inscription area, the material, and whether the work is done on one item or several. A short name and date on a larger surface will cost less than a multi-line tribute on a small, curved urn.
We quote clearly before starting so there are no surprises. Family orders and multiple matching pieces are assessed together, which can help keep the cost per item more manageable. If you need inscription combined with gift boxing or courier packaging, we include that in the quotation so the full cost is visible from the start.
- Single-piece pricing for simple wording
- Adjusted rates for longer text or smaller surfaces
- Bulk family order quotes available on request
- Courier packaging quoted separately where needed
Caring for inscribed urns over time
To keep the inscription readable, dust the surface gently with a soft dry cloth and avoid strong cleaners unless the material specifically allows it. On polished surfaces, a light wipe is usually enough. For wood and coated finishes, keep the urn away from direct sun and excessive moisture, especially in homes near the coast where humidity can affect some materials over time.
If the urn is displayed long term, check the inscription every few months for dust build-up, lifting edges on labels or any dulling caused by repeated handling. A simple maintenance interval of every 3 to 6 months is usually enough for most pieces. If the vessel is stored in a niche or cabinet, inspect it after seasonal changes and again if it is moved or cleaned by someone else.
