What message engraving includes
We work with a range of keepsake surfaces, including polished metal, selected plated finishes, wood, acrylic and suitable plaque materials. On jewellery, engraving is usually best kept to a limited number of words or characters, depending on the item. For urns and larger memorial pieces, there is more room for a full line or two, with balanced spacing and a clear finish.
Before engraving, we confirm the exact wording, spelling, punctuation and any preferred line breaks. If a message is supplied by a family member or from a funeral notice, we can set it out to suit the item and advise if it needs shortening. This helps avoid overcrowding and keeps the engraving respectful and readable.
- Character limits depend on item size and surface
- We can advise on spacing and line breaks
- Proof approval is available before production
- Suitable for memorial gifts and family keepsakes
How the engraving process works
Turnaround depends on the item, wording length and whether a proof approval is required. Short, standard messages on ready-prepared items can often be completed sooner than custom work that needs layout changes. During busy memorial periods, we recommend allowing a little extra time, especially if the order must be couriered to another province.
Nationwide courier delivery is available from Pretoria to Johannesburg, Cape Town, Durban, Bloemfontein, Gqeberha and smaller towns across South Africa. For local customers, pickup points such as Lynnwood, Menlyn, Brooklyn, Centurion, Silverton, Garsfontein, Montana and Midrand may be useful depending on the order type. If you need the piece for a service date, mention it in the enquiry form so we can advise on timing.
- Standard message engraving is usually quicker than custom layout work
- Proof approval can add time, but helps avoid errors
- Courier delivery time depends on destination and booking cut-off
- Urgent requests can be assessed case by case
Pricing that depends on wording, item and finish
Pricing is based on the type of item, the length of the message, the amount of layout work and whether extra steps such as gift boxing or courier packaging are needed. Short engravings with simple wording are usually more economical than multi-line memorial verses or detailed placement on curved surfaces. If you are ordering more than one item for a family, we can quote on the set as a group.
We keep pricing practical and clear, so you know what is included before work begins. If the wording needs to be shortened to fit the item, we will explain that first. There are no hidden add-ons for basic layout confirmation, and we will only proceed once the wording has been checked. That matters when the message is for a memorial piece, because the final result must be right first time.
- Quote depends on item type and message length
- Multi-item family orders can be priced together
- Gift boxing and courier packaging can be added
- Final cost is confirmed before engraving starts
Keeping engraved messages clean and readable
Most engraved messages need very little maintenance, but the finish will last longer if the item is handled and stored with care. Keep jewellery and keepsake pieces dry where possible, and avoid harsh cleaners, abrasive cloths or chemical dips that can dull the engraving. For urns and plaques, a soft dry cloth is usually enough for regular care.
If the item is kept in a home with coastal humidity, or stored for long periods in a cupboard or display area, it helps to check it now and then for dust, moisture and tarnish on surrounding parts. For pieces that are handled often, such as memorial jewellery or keepsake tokens, a gentle clean every few months is usually enough. If the engraving is on a plated or polished finish, be extra careful with polishing products as these can affect the surface around the message.
- Wipe with a soft dry cloth only
- Avoid harsh cleaning chemicals
- Store away from moisture and direct heat
- Check handled items every few months
